Historic Home Updates
Living room of the Akerberg Estate project
There’s something undeniably special about a historic home. The original millwork, the worn-in hardwoods, the stories layered into every corner. At INDIE HOUSE, we believe updating these spaces is less about erasing the past and more about refining it for modern life. The goal is simple: preserve the charm, elevate the function, and create a home that feels both timeless and lived in.
Rowan House Remodel
When approaching a historic renovation, we always start with what makes the home unique. Original architectural details like arched doorways, vintage tile, plaster walls, or antique hardware become the foundation of the design rather than something to “fix.” We lean into those imperfections, because character is what gives a home soul.
Before and after of the Rowan House Remodel, a Waterbury home.
In the Rowan Renovation, we used thoughtful updates make the space feel aligned with the client’s lifestyle. That meant opening up flow between rooms while maintaining original trim work, layering in updated lighting that complements the era of the home, and incorporating custom furnishings that feel collected instead of overly new.
Balancing modern upgrades with materials and finishes that still feel authentic to the home’s history is a skill we have refined.
Sustainability also plays a major role in how we design historic spaces. Preserving original materials whenever possible not only maintains the integrity of the home, but is kind to our earth! If we can find ways to restore instead of replace — refinishing cabinetry, repurposing vintage pieces, or sourcing natural materials designed to last for decades to come.
Akerberg Estate Living Room
The most successful historic homes don’t feel frozen in time, nor do they feel stripped of their identity. We create spaces that are layered, intentional, and effortlessly current - a reflection of both where they’ve been and how you live now.
We’d love to be a part of your home revival.
